Don’t Waste Food - or Money

Thanks, Cheryl B - always adding value!  This came from Parenting Magazine, January 2008.

Keep your groceries fresh longer!

DON’T:  Mix fruit and veggies - store seperately.  Fruit gives off ethylene, a gas that will make veggies spoil.

DO:  Put bananas in the fridge when they are ripened.  They’ll taste just as good and last longer.

DON’T:  Store potatoes, tomatoes, oranges or winter squash in your fridge.  Keep them at room temp and out of direct sunlight.

DO:  Freeze bread - it’ll stay fresh for about three months.  Nix the fridge - it dries out baked goods.

I disagree with Parenting Magazine on DON’T: Store potatoes, tomatoes, oranges or winter squash in your fridge. Keep them at room temp and out of direct sunlight.

I had two navel oranges that I left on the kitchen counter out of sunlight. They dried up. Then, somewhere, I read that citrus fruits are best refrigerated and started keeping all the citrus in the frig where they’re staying nice and juicy. I suppose they might be doing something to the other stuff that’s in the frig, but if they are, I haven’t noticed. Come to think of it, I also have apples with the zuccini and both look as fresh as the day I bought them.
